Mr S. Rajaratnam

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

last nite I was watching the news, the demise of Mr Rajaratnam was announced. I was wondering who this guy was and as I found out, he was the writer of the Singapore Pledge. After reciting for at least 12 years of my life, I suddenly became enlightened on why he wrote it the way it was. We didn’t experience the turlent times these forefathers went through and whatever was covered in the history lessons didn’t come across to me as significant during those growing up years. After watching the story on him,  I realised how important racial harmony was. Like what  I told my dad, this was a timely death of the forefather of racial harmony in singapore.  A lot was being said and stirred during these recent years by the terrorists and extremists. Even more so these months where a cartoon led boycotts and fighting among the nations.

His death will remind every Singaporean that racial harmony is indeed important and this is a "Singaporean Singapore" not a country made up of many immgrants. THe analogy for Singapore to become an hornets’ nest is so comical yet so true. We must aim to be small yet deadly till no one disturbs it. Harmony is something he created and idealised which is so much respected by all the other countries. He helped so much in foreign affairs and put Singapore on the world map.

For all these, I salute this forefather for his ideas that he put through and implement so effectively for Singapore, the Singapore we now know  as home.

Unity is strength and let’s keep it that way, friends.

“I not stupid 2″

Sunday, February 19th, 2006

happen to catch the sequel of "I not stupid" by Jack Neo. Well, the script is quite well-written in the local context and here are some things I would like to share with you all. The main lesson is on communicating correctly. Does talking, nagging and lecturing means you are communicating with your kids, partner or whoever you are talking to ? Apparently not, communication is a two-way thing. If it’s one way traffic, then you better find a new way to talk to the person. The other thing is on the kid who wanted an hour of the father’s time to attend the play he was acting in. As his dad get paid $500 for one hour of consultation, he saved and sold all his favorite "pokemon" cards. However, it’s not enough and he resorted to stealing. In the end, he was found out and his parents got the message that they were not making enough time to listen nor spend time with their kids. Sometimes, I wonder on why some parents spent so much time trying to make money, yet miss out on family life. A balance must be sought and since the decision was made to bring the kids to the world, why neglect them? Yes, definely a day is only 24 hours, but you get a choice to choose how you spend the time on. I will keep that in mind when I have kids in the future.

Last interesting thing of the show was on looking things on the bright side and do say good things to people and kids always. Pick on their good side, not keep focusing on the flaws of your surrounding people. Complaining don’t help, but encouragement does wonders sometimes. One little pleasant compliment can mean so much to someone on that day you make it to him/her. Try it and you will be happier too. Of course, do be sincere in making them or it will defeat the purpose.

Quite happy to pick up quite a few things today and will look forward to a happy week.
